Check Yourself Before you Wreck Yourself; or Worse, Me

Admittedly, I have been failing at this writing a blog everyday thing.  My last blog was weeks ago.  Whoops.  So I apologize for my blogging absence and the fact that I am coming back with the following rant.

I understand that I can get impatient while driving, that is why Bill usually drives when we are together.  I tend to get frustrated with traffic and my uncanny ability to catch every single red light.  However, I don't think it is just me be testy, to be annoyed by 40% of today's drivers.  (Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but it sure feels right!)

Today, I was driving down Madison Avenue in Murrieta.  The posted speed limit on this 4 lane road is 45mph.  The car in front of me was already only going 35mph when it started slowing down as we approached the GREEN light.  Slowly they started drifting over into the lefthand turn lane, but not signalling a turn.  By this point I had been forced to slow down to about 25mph, being blocked into the lane by cars speeding in the right lane and stuck behind the car halfway out of the left lane.  The car finally makes the decision to get into the turn lane enough for me to pass, when all of a sudden, it tries to pull back out into my lane.  I had to slam on my brakes and lay on the horn to even get them to notice I was there, narrowly avoiding a collision.

Can anyone tell me why people cannot drive the speed limit?  I know the "excuses": no sign posted, not from the area, etc.; but that can't be the case for everyone.  On a road posted as 45mph, there will be people going 35mph and people going 50mph, but no one actually going the legal speed.  And why is it that when ever you try to go around someone who is driving extra slow, they all of a sudden know what the speed limit is and speed up?

Did you know that turn signals USED to be a luxury item?  Yep.  Until they realized how useful they were and made them mandatory in new vehicles and against the law to not use them.  Know what irks me the most?  When police officers don't signal.  Set a good example please.

Surprising as it seems, that mirror hanging from the middle of your windshield isn't just so you can check your hair or make up.  It is there so you can see the vehicles behind you.  One of my biggest pet peeves is people driving like the only cars on the road are in front of them.

I know it is asking a lot for people to be considerate on the road.  I mean, it is only serious injury or death, right?  What's the big deal?

Pic of the Day: the Cajon Pass after the storm - Snow!

The spring storm that came in last night left a coat of snow across the entire pass. Very nice to look at and not a pain to drive thru either!

Pic of the Day: Angry clouds approaching Riverside County

A spring storm approaches Murrieta, California from the northwest. Looks like a lot of rain is in the near future!

My first day of being Gluten Free; 3/21/2011

It is not often I am this forward about my personal life, my medical health, but this seemed like something worth talking about.

Over the last few months I have been having some medical issues. I have been experiencing extreme discomfort in my 'belly' area. I was very alarmed and Jeney was downright freekin out about it. A few of you might have even noticed that at a recent school board meeting I was in some extreme pain towards the end of the meeting, to the point I had to excuse myself from the dais for a moment.

I feel like I owe a bit of an explanation, now that I have somewhat of an idea as to what is wrong with me.
After consulting with my doctor (I am still waiting for a few more test results) it would seem that I am one of approximately 16 million Americans with a wheat gluten allergy and/or celiac disease.

This would make plenty of sense after all, before the aforementioned school board meeting of pain, I had consumed a couple slices of garlic bread and had 2 plates of whole wheat pasta with veggies. By the end of that meeting I was in serious pain and I thank Mr Reller and Mrs Clites for their concern.

Now comes the interesting part, removing all gluten containing products from my selection of food.

Sounds simple right?

Wrong.

You would be amazed at all the food items that have some type of wheat or rye. And yes friends, that includes beer. I am relatively bummed to know that beer is something I should not consume. I also can't eat falafel, one of my favorite foods. Gone for me are Dennys pancakes, Spuntinos pizza and In n Out cheese sandwiches. A sad day indeed. :(

For the most part, eating out at restaurants will be an almost impossible task, so I will be getting creative in the kitchen. Farmers Markets, Barrons, Henry's, Trader Joes, Fresh and Easy and Sprouts will be my shopping destinations.

Lemons to lemonade, right?

I will be sure to post updates on this adventure and its changes in the way I feel. I will also be posting new recipes that people with gluten allergies can enjoy, of course they will also be vegetarian!

If you or any one you know has this or similar issues, feel free to chime in and comment about positive ideas or things to avoid.

Thanks,
Bill

Its here: the new Starbucks logo

Today is the day Starbucks (sbux) changes. New logo, new paint, new 'food on a stick' - it is all so different. Change can be good, but change just for the sake of change is often a questionable venture. As a stockholder I hope this is a brilliant move, as a customer I am not a fan of change.

Your thoughts?

Sm Biz: Discovering an old favorite; Red Tomato Pizza in Murrieta

Driving around today after picking up Apryl from school, we headed into Murrieta to check on one of my condos for lease. After finishing up at the condo, we decided to roll around and see what was new in the area. In 2005-2007 we did live music for teens at Java Joz coffee house and Monte Vista Elementary MPR and for the bands we would buy pizza.

For awhile we used a large corporate pizza joint. Horrible food, but they delivered and it worked. It worked until one day they gave my wife some attitude when they messed up an order. At this point we 'fired' them and went looking for a new spot.

We stumbled across Red Tomato Pizza (39040 Sky Canyon #108 Murrieta Ca 92563; 951-600-9101) one day and discovered that they had the BEST pizza deal in the valley - $5 medium pizza, cheese or 1 topping. Now this is a real pizza, with good sauce and it is decent cheese. One heck of a deal, and when we came across the place this afternoon we were thrilled to see they were still in business AND they had the same great deal.

I would advise you hit this place up and support local small business, it tastes good and feels good too.

I'm An Idolholic

Season 10 of American Idol has come into full swing with tonight revealing the Top 12 contestants.  I have watched Idol since Kelly Clarkson won the finale of Season 1.  I have watched all the silly audition shows where the people freak out and the Hollywood weeks where good people get sent home for silly reasons.  This season, however, has been different.  Different judges, different rules, different challenges.

I my opinion, the change was needed.  This cast of contestants is one of the best I have seen since the early years when Idol brought us Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice, Constantine Maroulis, Kelly Pickler, Ace Young and Jennifer Hudson.

This year I am impressed with the talent I have seen so far.  Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, James Durbin, and Scotty McCreery are my favorites amongst the guys and Naima Adedapo, Lauren Alaina, and Thia Magia are my picks for the girls.  Also making the Top 13 for Season 10 is Ashthon Jones, Jacob Lusk, Paul McDonald, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez and Pia Toscano
