NEAL YOUNG BOYCOTTS STARBUCKS

THIS NOs FOR YOU

Temecula, CA – Having no news as yet about the GMO referendums in Colorado and Oregon to report yet, here is the first of good news about the GMO fight.

“I used to line up and get my latte every day, but yesterday was my last one.”

Famous musician Neil Young wrote this on his website this past week, announcing that he would be boycotting Starbucks Coffee. The reason? Starbucks is one of three plaintiffs that are bringing up a lawsuit against the State of Vermont. Vermont passed a law this past spring that all food products containing GMO must be labeled as such (with the exception of dairy, meat, alcohol and restaurant served food) and Starbucks, Snack Food Association, the International Dairy Food Association and the National Association of Manufacturers are trying to challenge the law’s constitutionality.

Neil Young clearly feels the law should not be altered, and he feels that if Starbucks can be pressured out of going to court, the other companies may follow.

“There’s much more at stake here than just whether GMO foods will be labeled in a single U.S. state,” Young wrote. “Vermont is the very first state in the U.S. to require labeling. Dozens of other states have said that they will follow this path — in order to encourage this, we need to ensure that Vermont’s law stands strong.”

This news is just the latest example showing how sometimes it takes a few words from somebody popular to enlighten people about a potential issue. We as consumers deserve to know exactly what we’re putting in our bodies, especially with all the concern about health in this day and age. The fact that these companies have banded together to prevent the labeling of their products is enough to make one question what exactly GMO is capable of doing. Young’s vocalized outrage towards Starbucks’ decision is certainly a story that coffee drinkers (and rock music fans) will find provocative.

“Ain’t singing for Pepsi, ain’t singing for Coke,
I don’t sing for nobody, makes me look like a joke”

This news report written while rocking to 10 Men Working and the track that follows it.
